Nagpur, Feb 4. (PTI): Nine farmers committed suicide in various parts of Maharashtra's poverty-hit Vidarbha region during last 48 hours, an NGO said today.
Three of the farmers who committed suicide were from Buldana district, while two were from Chandrapur and one each from Yavatmal, Akola, Washim and Amravati, the NGO, Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti said in a release here.
With these nine deaths, 1,052 farmers have ended their lives after the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to the region on July 1, last year, the Samiti claimed.
The release said that Samiti president Kishore Tiwari in a letter faxed to PMO has urged to make provisions during the forthcoming budget for time-bound action to stop farmers from committing suicides.
He has also demanded rivision of Rural Credit Policy, complete waiver of loans to farmers and financial assistance for supplementary income generation schemes, the release added.
