NEW DELHI: The TOI report on 11 more farmers committing suicide in 48 hours in Vidarbha found its echo at the satyagraha conference on Tuesday with a Brazilian delegate pointing to the shocking news as indicative of the plight of the farm sector in many parts of the world.
Marta Suplicy, a former mayor of Sao Paulo, who attended the conference as the representative of president Lula, said that the cotton growers' plight in India in getting a good price for their produce was indicative of the deep problem facing the farm sector.
"Though in Brazil no farmer has committed suicide, we have to reckon with the huge subsidy the European countries give to the agriculture sector," she said. If Suplicy struck a grim note, at the other end was a Pakistani participant.
"'Lage raho Manmohanbhai, Musharrafbhai'," said Farooq Sattar, parliamentary party leader of Muttahida Quami Movement. His allusions were an ample evidence of the strong appeal of Bollywood beyond borders.
A prominent Pakistani politician, Sattar saw a great future for the two neighbours coming together. He said that if Europe could integrate like never before and the ASEAN grouping coming even closer, India and Pakistan, too, could sink differences for an integration of the subcontinent.
